Dear Friends,
We must remember that the power of the Gospel is the same today as it has been for around 2,000 years. Time changes a lot of things. Time changes the way you fit into jeans; time affects your investments; time affects the way you feel about certain things; time affects your health and relationships. Yet, time has not affected the power of the truth of the Gospel. Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
He has not changed and will not change. Everything He does is right, ALL THE TIME! As a preacher, there have been many times when I have become confused and think that “I” have something to do with the power of God, that “IT” somehow relies on not only the power of God, but also on me. Arguably, my life needs to be right, my witness needs to be intact, etc. However, the power of the Gospel has nothing to do with me. Whether I change or not, Christ and His eternal word do not change.
I say this, to say that many times, I am surprised to see God move in mighty ways in people’s lives. Keep in mind, I have never seen the dead raised or miracles such as Christ putting the ear of the soldier Malthus back on after Peter whacked it off when Christ was arrested! (John 18:9-10) I have, on the other hand, seen God bring about life change in people in such a way that causes me to stand in awe.
Recently, I was preaching a series of messages called “Supernatural Phenomenon.” It is a 5 message series about the Supernatural life of Christ from Incarnation, Crucifixion, Resurrection, Exaltation and The Gospel of Christ. After one of the messages a young lady in the Army approached my wife and I to talk about the message and how God used it to touch her life.
In short, she informed us that she was sexually active with her fiancé and regretted their relational status. She knew she was living in sin and somehow the message caused her to realize something needed to change. She said, “I am going to tell my fiancé that we have to stop having sex and that he needs to take me to church so we can grow spiritually together. If he won’t do this, I am going to break up with him.” My jaw is dropping at this point as I am seeing a young lady bet the whole farm on the word of God. It’s either God’s way or the highway, so to speak! Kristin and I prayed with her at that moment.
By the end of the weekend, we learned that she didn’t wait for him to make a decision. She realized that since he wasn’t a born-again man, she didn’t need to be engaged to him in the first place. Therefore, she broke up with him because he couldn’t possibly be her spiritual leader if he couldn’t even lead HIMSELF! It is an awesome privilege to see God at work in the lives of people. It is especially awesome when people allow it to happen.
UPDATE!
Our house has been for sale or rent for some time. We are waiting for it to sale or rent, as we feel the Lord is leading us out of Lynchburg & into a new direction to go and start a church. We are moving to the Nashville Metropolitan Area to begin a new harvest. This is an enormous step of faith and we need your prayers and support more than ever! Please pray for direction as we look for a place to live and Kristin looks for a job. Most importantly, we need wisdom now, more than ever, in our lives as we seek God for where we are going to start a church. Please also pray about a sacrificial gift to go toward the purchasing of equipment and supplies for the church plant.
